What Makes A Maker?

16 Oct 2019 12:57 PM | Deleted user

The Roswell Firelabs Makerspace is a community of makers, but what exactly does that mean? What qualifies someone as a maker? What makes the space a community? What’s a makerspace? According to Makerspaces.com, “A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools.” It’s a place for people in the surrounding area to come together and create things; what those things are is only limited by imagination.

What are some of the things created at the Roswell Firelabs?

Music
Glasswork
Etching
3D Printing
Sewing
Scrapbooks
Woodworking
Painting
Games & Gaming
Robotics
and so much more!

There’s something for everyone when it comes to a makerspace, and that’s exactly the point. The Roswell Firelabs is driven by what members want to see and do. That’s where the collaborative part comes in. The entire idea is built around serving members and those living in the surrounding area. Classes are introduced because interest has been expressed in learning those things.

In short, a maker is anyone who makes something, no matter the experience level. Newbies and veterans alike are welcome to join any of the classes at the Firelabs. You don’t even have to be a member to do so! While membership gives access to the space for independent projects and a reduced price on classes, everyone is welcome to come by and check out what goes on in the facility. The events page has a full list of what’s going on when and new classes are added to the calendar all the time.

There’s no way the Roswell Firelabs Makerspace could exist without its members, though. Their monthly donations help keep the space running and contribute to acquiring new or better equipment. Volunteers take care of the upkeep and administrative duties, as well as running the wonderful classes on offer. As a charitable organization, every penny that the Firelabs makes goes back into developing the space into the best it can be.

For those who are curious about the space or would like to visit; reach out! Questions are more than welcome through the website or Facebook page.
