It's the most wonderful time of the year, as the song goes! The Roswell Firelabs would like to offer thanks to everyone who has joined in and helped to make this first year so spectacular. So much has been accomplished and we couldn't have done it without you all. Thank you so, so much!

Let's keep the ball rolling in 2020! The Firelabs has big plans on how to continue growing the space and giving everyone as great an experience as we possibly can. In order to do this, our SIG leaders have put together some items that they think will really help. Items range from just a few dollars to a couple hundred, so there's something to fit any budget!

    Roswell Firelabs Holiday Wish List

    Swiffer Sweeper - High Priority

This handy tool is to help better clean our restroom floors. Our current mop leaves too much water behind, leading to the retention of dirt. A Swiffer Sweeper will capture dirt and dry faster for a longer-lasting clean!

    Extendable Duster

As some of you may have noticed, we have some pretty tall ceilings in our bay area. In order to clean the tracks for the doors and the various piping, we either need to climb a ladder or get our hands on something that can reach all the way up.

Brother RLX3817 Full Size Sewing Machine, White - High Priority

We are looking for FIVE of these affordable sewing machines for our sewing classes in the new year. They are great beginner machines and will more easily allow for uniformity when teaching the classes. Having so many on hand will also make it easier for members to use them for their own projects at the space as well. You can find the refurbished (and slightly cheaper) model here.

    Heavy Duty Staple Remover

The Roswell Firelabs is in need of SEVEN upholstery grade stable removers so we can start running some reupholstery classes in 2020. These handy tools make removing old fabric so much easier!

Rig Blaster Digital Mode Radio Interface

A new interface for our HAM radio area. This area has been around since the start of the Firelabs and offers a niche experience for those interested in radio transmissions.

    Hack Rf SDR Receiver/Transmitter

Though a lower priority than some of the other items on our list, this piece of equipment would still be a huge help to us!

    Other Items:

    Vinyl

    Acrylic Paints

    Large Black Trashbags

Drinks and Snacks for Kitchen Area

    Home Depot/Lowes/Ace Hardware Gift Cards

    Grocery Gift Cards

    Craft Supply Gift Cards

    Pottery Wheel(s)

Glass Scraps for Stained Glass Classes

Again, thanks so much to everyone who has helped make the Roswell Firelabs the amazing space that it is. Your generosity and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. Though the Firelabs blog will be taking a break until the new year, we look forward to seeing you all again in 2020!

    Last Minute Holiday Ornaments

Still looking for some stocking stuffers, or some unique decorations for your Christmas tree? Drop by the Roswell Firelabs to quickly create some last-minute festive glass ornaments. You will be able to pick out two ornaments from pre-made designs, and etch them in our blasting cabinet without having to do any design work or material preparation.

Are you familiar with the "Clean Up" song? It's a classic in preschools, elementary schools, and homes all across the country. Maybe you heard it growing up, too.

    Clean up, clean up!

    Everybody, everywhere!

    Clean up, clean up!

    Everybody do your share!

At the Roswell Firelabs Makerspace, a lot of how the space is kept is dependant on volunteer and member efforts. Because of this, doing your share can make a huge difference! When teaching or participating in a class, or working on your own projects, we ask that you take the time to clean up after yourself.

In the classroom or the common area:

    • Push the chairs back in around the table
    • Make sure the tables are clear of any scraps or leftover supplies
    • If there's a spill, please wipe it up
    • Throw all trash away in the bins (If you're an overachiever, you can also take a full trash bag out to the bins along the side of the building and replace it with a new bag from the supply in the restroom)
    • Make sure any equipment used has been cleaned up and put away
    • Personal food should be labeled in the communal fridge if not meant for sharing
    • Please do not leave personal food in the communal fridge past expiration
    • Please turn the lights off when you leave

    In the main bay:

    • Don't use common work areas covered in adhesives or paint
    • If you change the settings on any equipment, change them back once you're finished for the day
    • Make sure the tables are clear of any scraps or leftover supplies. Surplus that you don't need anymore can go in the scrap bins
    • When doing woodwork, please use the shop vac to clean up the floor AND the work surface before moving on
    • Throw all trash away in the bins (Again, please feel free to take out and replace any full trash bags)
    • Please put away any equipment pulled out and used
    • Remember that other people are using this space, too. ALL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES SHOULD REMAIN AT THE FIRELABS
    • Don't leave project sitting out and in the way of others
    • Please turn the lights off when you leave

    In the restrooms:

    • When cleaning paintbrushes and other equipment, please remember to rinse out the sink
    • If you put the seat up, please put it back down
    • If you 'miss', please wipe it up
    • Use the air freshener as needed
    • Please turn the lights off when you leave

The responsibility to keep the Roswell Firelabs Makerspace a nice, pleasant place to create rests on all of our shoulders. All of this boils down to one simple rule, leave it how you found it. Or better than! There's nothing wrong with doing a little something extra in the space if you see a need.

Speaking of needs, the Firelabs has some items on our holiday wish list to help us keep things neat and tidy! Whether you have one at home you'd like to donate, or you're feeling extra generous and want to purchase one new, we're on the lookout for these items:

    Swiffer Sweeper

This handy tool is to help better clean our restroom floors. Our current mop leaves too much water behind, leading to the retention of dirt. A Swiffer Sweeper will capture dirt and dry faster for a longer-lasting clean!

    Extendable Duster

As some of you may have noticed, we have some pretty tall ceilings in our bay area. In order to clean the tracks for the doors and the various piping, we either need to climb a ladder or get our hands on something that can reach all the way up.

Other housekeeping donations can include: large black trash bags, Lysol wipes, and disinfectant sprays.

Working together, we can keep our space clean so it's a better experience for everyone.

This year has brought many firsts for the Roswell Firelabs Makerspace. The Grand Opening on May 4th was just the beginning. From there, the Roswell Firelabs has hosted a variety of classes, partnered with organizations such as Bach 2 Rock Alpharetta, and grown more and more every day. Now, the Firelabs is gearing up for another first: The 1st Annual Holiday Maker Marketplace!

Held on December 7th from 2PM – 7PM, this fun event is the perfect opportunity to come see unique, handmade crafts and gift items from local makers as the holiday season approaches. Some of these makers will include Roswell residents (and Firelabs members) MaryJoe Jenkins, Jessica Mathis, and many more!  Wares range from jewelry to woodwork to children’s books and more, so there’s something for everyone.

There will be hot chocolate and cider to stave off the winter chill and a photo setup for all your holiday picture needs! The Roswell Firelabs will also offer tours of the space as well as class and membership sign ups. Those curious about the space and what goes on at the Firelabs are welcome to come by the table and ask as many questions as they’d like.

The 1st Annual Holiday Maker Marketplace welcomes all ages, and Bach 2 Rock Alpharetta will be providing music throughout this family-friendly event. Shuttle service from the approved parking lots will be provided by Carl Black Buick GMC. The Roswell Firelabs would like to offer both groups, along with the City of Roswell, a huge thank you for all of their support in making this space and event a reality.

So, what can you do to help?

We're so glad you asked! There's lots to do to get ready for our big day. If you have any projects out in the main bay area, please be sure to move and store them correctly so they aren't damaged or misplaced. The Firelabs will be closed to project work from Thursday Dec. 5 at 5 PM to Sunday Dec 8 at noon.

Even though the space will be closed, we'd still love to see you at the market! Bring friends, family, neighbors, and anyone else! Spread the word and let others know to come out and support these local artisans and your fellow Firelabs members! There's a flyer below that you can print out and spread around to help us even more. We'd also love for you to talk about the event on Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, or other social medias. The more, the merrier!

Finally, volunteers are always appreciated. We'll be starting cleanup on Thursday evening and helping vendors unload and setup Friday eventing and Saturday morning. Anyone available to help then would be greatly appreciated! You can also volunteer to help run the Firelabs booth at the market, offering tours and talking to people about memberships and classes. Keep in touch on Slack for more information!

We look forward to seeing you all there!

With the Roswell Firelabs’ Holiday Maker Marketplace just around the corner (Saturday, December 7 from 2PM to 7PM) this is a great time to consider that some of the makers presenting at the market are also members of the Firelabs. Many of them are familiar faces that you’ve seen around the makerspace working on projects or teaching classes. Coming out to the Holiday Maker Marketplace is a great way to support them and the space. Community, after all, is what the Roswell Firelabs is all about.

    John Hinkel

John Hinkel specializes in selling Mid-Century Modern (from the 60s) brass, and silver through his online store, Unique Decor (www.chairish.com/shop/uniquedecor).  All of the pieces are sourced from goodwills and other local thrift shops!  Then, once John finds a piece, it is polished to give it the best condition and shine.  Brass that John finds will be in a variety of conditions from completely tarnished to completely covered in paint!

Each piece of brass and silver has its own unique refinishing challenges, and John takes pride in making sure that every piece gets returned to the way it was originally. The Roswell Firelabs’ sandblaster is one of the tools John uses when refinishing these pieces. He can often also be found with the 3D printers and is always open to training individuals who want to learn more about them.

To see John’s interesting thrift finds and steps to refinishing different pieces, head over to his store’s Instagram @uniquedecor_atl

    Jessica Mathis

Jessica Mathis is a veteran when it comes to attending markets, fairs, and trade shows. She creates everything from custom-painted wooden signs to ‘Santacam’ ornaments. The tool Jessica uses most at the Roswell Firelabs? The Silhouette Cutter! Jessica is a master of crafting unique and beautiful designs on the computer and bringing them to life with her creations. She’ll be taking custom orders at the Maker Marketplace.

She can often be found around the space teaching glass etching and sign painting classes, both of which are some of the most popular classes offered at the Firelabs. Earlier this month, she also led a class where the participants were able to etch custom designs into glass ornaments. For these classes, she often teams up with sandblasting expert William Strika – who will also be exhibiting at the Maker Marketplace.

You can check out her work at PB&J Creations on Facebook.

    Steve Kennedy

Steve Kennedy is the wizard of the Roswell Firelabs Woodshop. Though most of the equipment he uses will be put away for the Holiday Maker Marketplace, Steve will be attending as a vendor with his handmade cutting boards and other unique products. Recently, Steve confided that he’s planning to showcase several projects, including serving trays, made from reclaimed barnwood that’s over 150 years old.

Between teaching the occasional class, providing training to those wanting to become authorized on all the woodshop equipment, and working on his own projects, Steve can be found around the Firelabs most any day of the week. With expertise and an ever welcoming demeaner, he’s happy to give advice where needed and is an endless fount of knowledge. There isn’t a tool in the woodshop he doesn’t know inside and out.

    Mary Hannaford

Mary Hannaford makes crafty gift items with her mother as well as writing children’s books under the penname MaryJoe Jenkins. Her books offer fun, adorable storylines that carry a moral lesson while taking the reader through an age-appropriate recipe that’s then provided at the end of the book. A culinary school graduate and a veteran of the industry, Mary designs all the recipes herself and tests them out with the kids of friends and family. She prides herself in making sure no recipe is more than four steps long, keeping things simple for busy families.

Mary also spreads her love of food at the Firelabs, where she teaches cupcake and cookie decorating classes for all ages. She also runs classes and hosts games for Dungeons & Dragons, the tabletop role-playing game, and uses the woodshop for her hobby of refinishing and upcycling furniture pieces.

You can find out more about Mary’s books on her Amazon Author Page, her website, or by following her on Facebook.

But these aren’t the only members who will be at the Roswell Firelabs Makerspace Maker Marketplace! Check out these other awesome Member Vendors:

    John Ramminger – Wood Products

Jessica Hain – Jhain Art Silver Jewelry

Judy Howard – Panther and Dragonfly Productions Art & Bath Products

Non-Member Vendors will also be in attendance, featuring everything from handmade clothing to soaps to crotchet and handmade journals. There will also be hot chocolate and spiced apple cider available from the space to help keep everyone warm and Bach 2 Rock will be providing music for the evening.  A photobooth will be set up underneath the large three out front with Firelabs volunteers around to help you take all your holiday photos, so no one gets left out! Parking is available across the street at Connections Plaza and Carl Black Auto is supplying a complimentary shuttle service.

The Roswell Firelabs Maker Marketplace isn’t something you’ll want to miss out on! Let us know you’re coming here.

Want to help? Spread the word! Share the Roswell Firelabs’ Facebook posts, tell your friends and family (or just anyone), and get people excited for this event! You can also print out the flyer included below and put it up in your local coffeeshop, pass it out in the grocery store or mall as you do your holiday shopping, or stick it in every neighbor’s mailbox. We’ll leave the choice up to you.
