Make a tool you’ll use for a lifetime—crafted by your own hands. In this workshop, you’ll transform raw hardwood into your very own joiner’s mallet, the traditional woodworker’s go-to for everything from chiseling to assembly work. You’ll learn key skills including accurate measuring and marking, laminating for strength, shaping and smoothing, and fitting a tapered handle into a secure wedged mortise.
During class you’ll:
Prepare your hardwood stock.
Cut, glue, and shape the mallet head for perfect balance.
Shape a comfortable, ergonomic handle.
Fit and wedge the handle so it’s rock-solid for years of use.
All mallets will be made from a combination of maple and walnut. Additional choices may be available for an additional fee the day of class - If there is a specific wood you would like to include in your mallet, please reach out to the instructor ahead of your class.
An understanding of how to safely use a table saw, miter saw, band saw, and router table is very helpful but not required. You’ll leave with a fully finished mallet and the know-how to make more.
