02:00PM - 04:00PM:  Getting Started in the Metal Shop

This orientation introduces some of the policies, equipment, and safety procedures in the Roswell Firelabs metal shop. This class will NOT teach you how to weld, however, students will be shown how to safely use a few of the common tools used in the metal shop and will get a chance to make a few MIG welds. Taking Metal Shop Orientation will not authorize you to use the welder, the handheld plasma cutter, the CNC plasma cutter, or the drill press by yourself, but we will cover the procedures for how to get authorized.

Be advised: Students must bring safety glasses, work gloves, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeves. Cotton and leather clothing only (no polyester). If ALL attendees are not dressed appropriately the class will be rescheduled.

Unless rescheduled, Metal Shop Orientation is the first Sunday of the Month.

Orientation is led by Paul Teal, who put together a small metal shop to make balloon frames for his balloon art business. He is now selling balloon frames to other balloon artists at www.EventWelding.com.

    02:00PM - 5:00PM: TIG Brazing Project

Are you intimidated by TIG welding? I don't blame you if you are. As a TIG welder, I know that there are many things you have to do simultaneously to make a quality TIG weld.

I designed this class to give you a little experience behind a TIG torch, without having perform a bunch of simultaneous precise actions:

I will set the machine up so that you don't need to worry about knowing any welding settings.

We will be braising with silicon bronze instead of welding. This will make it a lot easier for us to do “Do Overs” if we mess up. We won't be melting the base steel at all.

We will be using a hand switch instead of a foot pedal, so you have one less thing to do while you're holding the torch.

We will be using a “Lay Wire” technique, so you won't have to worry about feeding with one hand while you're holding the torch with the other.

We will let the TIG welder pulse the arc for us, which will give things a nice look.

Braising isn't as strong as welding, but it's plenty strong for the project we will be building: Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer). You will get to take your project home with you as a souvenir.

Students do not need any prior metalworking or welding experience. This class will NOT fully teach you how to weld but it will be a great exercise in how to control the torch, which is a great first step toward quality TIG welding.

Be advised: Students must bring safety glasses, work gloves, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeves. Cotton and leather clothing only (no polyester). If ALL attendees are not dressed appropriately, the class will be rescheduled. For the best experience, buy yourself a pair of TIG gloves. You can buy a pair at Harbor Freight or your local welding supplier.

The class is taught by Paul Teal, who designs, welds, and sells steel balloon number frames.
